Not your keys, not your NFTs. Reddit Mods kicked off platform, many lose valuable NFTs.

Updated: Aug 12, 2023

The digital landscape has witnessed the rise of social media platforms, serving as a platform for discourse, content sharing, and community building. Reddit, one of the most popular online forums, owes much of its success to the dedication of its moderators. However, recent events have highlighted a concerning trend, as moderators are being expelled from the platform for protesting. The mods who have been kicked off the platform have also lost access to their entire Reddit NFT collections.

Reddit moderators play a crucial role in upholding the values of their respective communities by enforcing rules, managing content, and facilitating discussions. These volunteer contributors invest countless hours into their roles, driven by a passion for maintaining the integrity of their communities. Unfortunately, recent controversies surrounding Reddit’s API pricing have emerged, leading to moderators organizing protests and raising their voices against perceived injustices within the platform.

Regrettably, the response from Reddit administration has been the expulsion of these protesting moderators. By removing their access and privileges, the platform effectively silences dissent and undermines the core principles of transparency and community participation. This development has significant implications not only for the moderators themselves but also for the wider Reddit community.

One of the notable repercussions of this expulsion is the loss of collectible Reddit NFTs, or non-fungible tokens. NFTs are unique digital assets that represent ownership of a particular item or piece of content. In the case of Reddit, these NFTs can be obtained by moderators as a symbol of recognition for their contributions and dedication to their communities. These tokens often hold sentimental value but also large amounts of economic value and serve as a mark of distinction within the Reddit ecosystem.

However, with moderators being kicked off the platform, they lose access to their accounts, including their crypto wallets containing these valuable NFTs. This highlights an important aspect of cryptocurrency ownership: the concept of crypto wallets and private keys.

In the world of cryptocurrencies, digital wallets act as secure repositories for storing various crypto assets, including NFTs. These wallets are protected by private keys, which are essentially unique cryptographic codes that grant access to the stored assets. Without possessing these keys, users are unable to access, transfer, or manage their crypto assets effectively.

In the context of Reddit NFTs, the expulsion of moderators means they no longer possess the necessary private keys to access their crypto wallets. Consequently, even if the NFTs themselves exist on the blockchain, they become effectively inaccessible and functionally lost to their rightful owners. @JackDaniel8008 took to Twitter to confirm he no longer has access to his Reddit NFTs allegedly worth about $5000.
