Reddit may bring lawsuit against protesting moderators for harassment of CEO, tortious interference.

Reddit has the right to enforce its policies and protect its platform, which may involve initiating lawsuits against moderators who violate those policies. Reddit can seek remedies such as injunctions, damages, or other appropriate relief.

Reddit, a popular online platform, relies on moderators to maintain community standards and foster a positive user experience. Recently the moderators have been protesting over Reddit’s new API pricing. However, moderators must adhere to certain rules and guidelines set forth by Reddit to ensure compliance with their policies. Failure to do so may result in legal action being taken against moderators, particularly in cases involving content restriction, incitement to violate community rules, and tortious interference with Reddit's business.

Content Restriction: Moderators play a crucial role in creating, facilitating, and maintaining stable communities on Reddit. However, if moderators restrict content in a manner that violates Reddit's Content Policy, they may face legal repercussions. Reddit, as the platform operator, has the right to enforce its policies and take action against moderators who enable or encourage the dissemination of rule-breaking content or behavior. Reddit may initiate legal action against moderators who knowingly allow or actively promote prohibited content, such as hate speech, harassment (of the Reddit CEO Steve Huffman aka u/spez), or illegal activities. In such cases, moderators could be held liable for their actions or omissions that contribute to the dissemination of prohibited content.

Incitement to Violate Community Rules: Moderators must respect the rights of other communities and users on Reddit. Engaging in activities that incite members of their community to violate community rules or interfere with other communities can lead to legal consequences. Reddit may take legal action against moderators who, for instance, mention other communities with the intent of inciting targeted harassment or abuse, encourage users to violate Reddit's Content Policy, or facilitate the posting of prohibited content in other communities. Such actions may give rise to claims of defamation, harassment, or tortious interference, as moderators may be held responsible for their role in instigating or encouraging harmful behaviors.

Tortious Interference with Reddit's Business: Reddit relies on a system of moderators to maintain a cohesive platform that aligns with its mission and goals. However, when moderators engage in activities that disrupt or interfere with Reddit's business operations, they may face legal consequences. Tortious interference occurs when a third party intentionally interferes with a contractual or business relationship to cause harm. If moderators act in a way that hampers Reddit's ability to function, such as by purposefully disregarding or subverting Reddit's rules, policies, or requests, Reddit may pursue legal action against them for tortious interference. This could result in potential liability for damages caused by the interference or even injunctive relief to prevent further harm.

Legal Reproductions and Consequences: Moderators who engage in content restriction, incitement, or tortious interference may face various legal consequences.

  • Legal action by Reddit: Reddit has the right to enforce its policies and protect its platform, which may involve initiating lawsuits against moderators who violate those policies. Reddit can seek remedies such as injunctions, damages, or other appropriate relief.

  • Removal from moderator positions: Reddit may remove moderators from their positions within a specific community or even prohibit them from joining additional moderator teams or creating new subreddits as a consequence of their actions.

  • Account suspension or termination: Reddit may temporarily or permanently suspend the accounts of moderators found in violation of the Moderator Code of Conduct. This could result in loss of access to the platform and its associated privileges.

  • Content removal and community restrictions: Reddit may remove specific content posted by moderators or impose restrictions on the affected communities, such as adding NSFW tags or Quarantining, as a response to violations.

Moderators on Reddit play a vital role in shaping positive community experiences. However, they should take heed of the rules and commitments they made to Reddit by becoming a moderator.
